The owner of the famous feline internet sensation ‘Grumpy Cat’ has successfully sued a coffee shop in California for AUD$883,000 for breach of a copyright licensing agreement. The café had originally paid Grumpy Cat Ltd a fee to use the famous cat-meme on their ‘Grumpaccino’ iced coffees, but they overstepped the bounds of their agreement when they started to use Grumpy Cat’s image to promote their other products as well.

Are you thinking about using another person (or cat’s!) image to promote your business? To avoid a law suit down the line, make sure you are aware of what you can and can’t do when using an image that isn’t your own.
